PromoHunt was supposed to be blocked. Then it changed.

Our QA team caught PromoHunt reappearing on a small number of ecommerce sites after the extension changed its behavior in the shopper’s browser.

The exposure was limited, but the signal mattered.

This is exactly how browser extensions operate. They shift. They update. They find new ways to appear in the shopper journey.

And if no one is actively watching, they can sit there quietly, influencing discounts, margin, and attribution before the brand ever sees it.

Why this is easy to miss

Most extension activity does not look like a major site issue.

The site still loads. Checkout still works. Orders still come through. From the brand’s side, everything can appear normal.

That is because browser extensions do not behave like standard website code. They run inside the shopper’s browser, where they can read and modify page content after the site has loaded.

For coupon and cashback extensions, that activity often happens exactly where brands have the most to lose: cart and checkout. PayPal Honey, for example, says its extension can pop up at checkout, scan known coupon codes and apply the one that gives the shopper the biggest savings. Capital One Shopping describes a similar cart or checkout flow for testing and applying promo codes.

That makes the behaviour easy to miss if teams are only looking at standard site performance. The shopper sees a way to save. The brand sees a completed order. What can get lost in between is the impact on discount expectations, margin and attribution.

Why it matters before checkout

By the time a shopper reaches checkout, the brand has already done the hard work.

The visit was acquired. The product was found. Purchase intent was created.

When a coupon or cashback extension appears at that point, it can change the economics of the order. A shopper who was ready to buy may pause to look for a discount. A full-margin order can become coupon-influenced. Attribution becomes harder to read.

This is not only about a coupon appearing. It is about a third party influencing the offer at the most sensitive point in the journey.

That is why even a small exposed audience matters.

 

The bigger pattern

PromoHunt is the latest example, but it is not the only one.

Coupert has also moved beyond traditional coupon and cashback behaviour into price comparison, placing competitor offers directly on product pages.

Different extension. Same pattern.

Browser extensions are becoming more active inside the shopping journey.

Some influence discounts. Some redirect attention. Some create price-comparison moments. Some behave differently by product, session, geography, or rollout stage.

That is why ecommerce teams need to think beyond one-off blocking.

They need two clear layers of protection:

Ad Blocking: stopping ads, price comparison and competitor offers from pulling shoppers away.

Coupon Control: stopping coupon and cashback extensions from changing discount behaviour, margin and attribution at the point of purchase.

The market already understands the problems. The gap is making sure the protection keeps up as those problems change.

What ecommerce teams should ask

To understand whether browser extensions are influencing your site, start with the questions that show actual business impact:

  • Which coupon, cashback and price-comparison extensions are active on our site?
  • Where do they appear in the journey: product page, cart or checkout?
  • How often are shoppers exposed?
  • What revenue is tied to that exposed audience?
  • Do we know when extension behaviour changes?

That last question is often the gap.

Blocking an extension once can solve today’s version of the problem. Knowing when that extension changes is what keeps protection current.

For ecommerce teams, the lesson is simple: browser extensions do not stand still, so protection cannot be treated as a one-time project.

The goal is not to overreact every time an extension updates. The goal is to have a process that can detect the change, understand the exposure, and update protection before it becomes a bigger risk.
